How do you design a boat hull? If you want to do it yourself, and I'd definitely recommend that you do, you'll need some highly flexible boat hull design software. There are professional companies out there who will design a boat for you, and a good job they do too, but there's no getting away from it - they cost a lot of money.

Control
Well, if, like me, you like to have control over the design of the things you want to build, then you'll find that having your own software gives you the opportunity to experiment with your ideas, to compare possible options and to give free reign to your imagination.
I don't want to do it that way
When you finally settle on a design that you're happy with you can do it in the knowledge that you've evaluated all the possibilities. This just doesn't happen when you commission someone else to do it for you. You give them your brief and they go away and try to interpret your ideas for you. That's not the way I want to do it.
Experience
You're probably thinking, 'I have no experience in boat design'. Well, you obviously have an interest in boats and boat building or you wouldn't be reading this. You probably have a lot more background experience than you might acknowledge. This, allied with the fact that modern boat hull design software is very easy to learn and use, and contains a wealth of facilities for handling calculations and the like means that for my money, designing your own boat is not only one of the most satisfying things you can do, it's also the most sensible.
